PRIMARY FUNCTION

CMA/RNs are member of a primary care team responsible for the care and treatment of patients in a medical office by assisting medical providers utilizing both assessment and technical skills. CMA/RNs ensure efficient patient flow in rooming/triaging patients, completing orders and answering patient questions, often acting as a liaison on behalf of our patients to provide high quality healthcare.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES

  1. Maintains records of vital statistics and other pertinent patient data including medical and social histories.
  2. Prepares patients for and assists with examinations.
  3. Conducts specified laboratory tests.
  4. Collects lab specimens, including blood, urine, stool, sputum, mucous, and skin sources.
  5. Administers injections and medications, dresses wounds and incisions, interprets physicians’ instructions to patients, assists with emergency and minor surgery, and performs related tasks as directed.
  6. Cleans and sterilizes instruments and equipment, and maintains stock of supplies and medications.
  7. Records and develops electrocardiograms.
  8. Relays messages to providers, assist providers with prescription requests, phones in prescriptions to the appropriate pharmacy once ordered and instructed to by a provider.
  9. Other duties within the scope of practices as assigned by the provider and/or supervisor.
  10. Employees are responsible for maintaining a thorough understanding of their role in the protocols listed below, essential to the completion of daily medical back office responsibilities.  Additionally, employees are responsible for maintaining a thorough understanding of the remaining medical back office protocols, specific to less frequent medical back office workflows, as found on the intranet.  All protocols are updated periodically and employees are expected to remain current on any updates.

    14. Protocol- Labs from Outside Provider Application
    15. Protocol- Recurring Orders
    16. Protocol- Telepsychiatry Visits
    17. Protocol- Standing Orders for Administering Seasonal Influenza to Adults
    18. Protocol- Standing Orders for Administering Seasonal Influenza to Children
    19. Protocol- Recurring Orders
    20. Protocol- In Medical Emergencies
    21. Protocol- Lab Specimen Drop Off
    22. Protocol- Patient Chaperone
    23. Protocol- Lab Controls
    24. Protocol- Potential Varicella-Varicella Infection Exposure
  1. Assists with other duties or in other departments as instructed by the supervisor.
  2. Requirements
Minimum Education
Completion of an accredited program for medical assisting or nursing program
 
Minimum Work Experience
Minimum 1 year medical office experience preferred.
 
Required License
Current Kentucky Nursing license or Certification/Registration for medical assisting
Basic Life Support Certification
